The Greater Victoria School Board has given unanimous approval to spend just over $73-Million to preserve and upgrade Victoria High School.
Vic High opened 104 years ago -- in 1914 -- making it the oldest school west of Winnipeg and north of San Fransisco.
Besides preserving the outside out the building and parts of the inside, plans include seismic upgrades, and a neighbourhood learning centre.
Eight hundred students attend Vic High, which is rated at the top level of need for seismic upgrades.
Trustees had also considered an almost $68-Million plan that would have seen the aging school demolished to make room for a new school.
The plan still needs approval from the BC Education Ministry, their decision as well as how much provincial funding will be involved, is expected this fall.
