Good news if you enjoy camping. The government has added more than 200 campsites across the province with more than 100 right here on Vancouver Island.
Here's the breakdown: 52 near Squamish; more than 100 on Vancouver Island; 55 in the Okanagan and 20 in Northern B.C.
Thirty new sites will be added at Rathtrevor Provincial Park in Parksville, Goldstream Provincial Park near Victoria will see a boost of four sites and Maple Grove Rec Site near Lake Cowichan will get 22 new sites.
Last season, local campers expressed frustration after popular campgrounds sold out within minutes.
There was also controversy after reports travel companies and scalpers snatched up prime spots -- only to resell them for much more.
That led the government to modify its reservation system. Now campers can only book four months in advance.
The announcement is the first phase of the 1,900 new campsites promised by the government in Nov. 2016 as part of the BC Future Parks Strategy.
