Premier John Horgan says the province is devote $10Million to pay for safety upgrades to #Hwy14 between Langford and Sooke -- and says it's only the first phase of a number of safety, transit and congestion improvements for the route.
The $10-million will pay for upgrades lighting, 3 additional bus pullouts, safety signs and a new two-lane bridge on Gillespie Road.
There will also be a new rest area constructed at the Sombrio Beach lookout point, a pullout for a slow-moving vehicles created east of Muir Creek, and a bus queue jump lane at Jacklin Road.
As well design work on an intersection upgrade at Sooke River Road will get underway immediately.
Horgan -- who is the MLA for the Juan de Fuca area, says Highway 14 is an essential connection for people on southern Vancouver Island, and people on the West Shore have been frustrated for too long by mounting congestion and traffic bottlenecks. He says the changes will make travel safer and less stressful, and will enable people to spend more time with their families, instead of sitting in traffic.
The next phase will be unveiled later this year, and will focus on intersection upgrades, passing lanes, improving highway alignment and widening shoulders for cyclists.
