The funding to train more volunteers is in place, but the Malahat Fire Department is still having a problem attracting new firefighters.
The volunteer department covers a section of the Malahat from the top of Tunnel Hill to the Bamberton Interchange.
"Our main problem is... you know... We have money for training. We have money for equipment. But our greatest commodity we're always short on is people."
Malahat Fire Chief Rob Patterson says volunteers aren't required to live within the jurisdiction or have any prior experience, but they do need to attend seventy percent of weekly practices.
