A local swimmer will be making waves in her effort to raise awareness about big oil tankers and ocean protection.
Renate Herberger will be swimming across Saanich Inlet on Sunday, a feat that will take her nine hours.
This is her second year doing the swim but she says it isn't as challenging as it seems.
"I realize that for pretty well everyone else it would be an impossibility," says Herberger. "For me, I think I'm just built to do this. I have an inner mermaid."
She will hit the water at 10 Sunday morning at Brentwood Bay and finish up between six and 8 that night in Deep Cove.
Herberger has logged more than 5000km internationally on long-distance swims and is very involved in raising awareness about ocean protection.
She will have three kayaks with her as she completes the swim. She will refuel everything 30 minutes with warm tea and chocolate.
