Downtown reopened to traffic after gas leak

July 07, 2013 04:11 from Adam Kuzina

Streets around the Empress Hotel and the BC Legislature are once again open to traffic after a natural has leak shut down the area for hours.

Just after midnight, Fortis BC crews were dispatched to the area after people reported smelling natural gas. A reading confirmed there was an underground leak.

Micheal Allison with Fortis BC says the danger to the public was minimal, since natural gas is lighter than air, and dissipates into the atmosphere quickly.

Crews shut off the gas around 4 am and began venting the storm drains in the area. Fortis BC had to excavate part of the road to repair the gas line. The cause of the leak isn't known yet. All affected roads were reopened around 1 pm.
