BC Hydro charges customers who refuse smart meters

September 16, 2013 08:32 from Jillian Vandergeest

BC Hydro customers who refuse smart meters will be charged a $35 monthly fee -- an amount that critics are calling "extortion".

Some disgruntled customers are taking legal action saying BC Hydro does not have permission to charge these rates as they have yet to be approved by BC's independent utilities commission.

Sharon Noble, outspoken critic and director of the Coalition to Stop Smart Meters plans to challenge the fees and believes the customer has a right to refuse smart meter installation on their property.

Customers can also choose to pay $100 to have the radio transmitter turned off, and $20 a month for manual readings, on top of their regular hydro bill.
