Decision has been reserved in Saanich's appeal of a B-C Supreme Court order that the municipality pay damages to the widow of a man shot by a police officer in 2004.
The trial judge agreed with plaintiff Teresa Camaso that her husband was the victim of a wrongful shooting, and that the Saanich police department was negligent in its investigation of the incident. Damages were awarded in the amount of 350 thousand dollars.
In May of last year Saanich retained a former Police Complaints Commissioner to conduct a review of departmental policies in light of the Judge's findings and comments...and in January the police board announced implementation of a series of recommendations. But, at the same time, Saanich proceeded with its appeal.
Those arguments have been heard this week, and a ruling is expected to be at least two months away.
